Science fiction legend Adrian Tchaikovsky is making his graphic novel debut with the upcoming Salvation’s Child. The book, released through Amazon’s Comixology, will serve as a prequel to Tchaikovsky’s The Final Architecture series that began with 2021’s Shards of Earth. Given the critical and commercial acclaim of Tchaikovsky, fans of science fiction have every reason to get hyped for Salvation’s Child.
Salvation’s Child is releasing exclusively through Comixology Originals on May 26th. Written by Tchaikovsky with art by Mike Collins, the graphic novel mixes the wonder of space found in classic science fiction like Star Trek with the more grounded character focus of the best modern science fiction like The Expanse.
The Final Architecture series takes place in a future where a race of massive aliens called Architects periodically comb the galaxy to find and destroy inhabited planets. Unfortunately, that leads to the destruction of Earth. Salvation’s Child follows a woman named Marta and her daughter Xavienne as they navigate post-Earth life and the ongoing threat of another Architect attack.
In a preview shared with ScreenRant by Comixology and the newly established Cosmic Lighthouse imprint, Marta and Xavienne embark on a journey through space to act as human liaisons for various alien races. This provides Salvation’s Child with an opportunity to introduce a few concepts core to the heart of The Final Architecture.
Salvation’s Child Contains A Heartwarming Nod To A Classic Doctor Who Actor
An important faction within The Final Architecture’s lore is the Partheni, a group of clones who act as a sort of protective force for humanity as they spread out among the stars. As can be seen in the preview pages, though the Partheni may be genetically identical, each still manages to find their own sense of individuality.
What makes the Partheni especially fun in Salvation’s Child is the art by Mike Collins. Collins very specifically models each member of the Partheni after beloved Doctor Who actress Sophie Aldred. Aldred’s Ace is fondly remembered as one of the best Doctor Who companions, so her likeness will be a welcome sight for science fiction fans.
What makes the reference even better, however, is that Aldred is the narrator for the Final Architecture audiobooks, already giving the actress a deep connection to Tchaikovsky’s work.
Salvation’s Child Reveals What Makes Tchaikovsky Such An Icon
Known for works such as his Children of Time series and the recently released Alien Clay, Tchaikovsky is an acclaimed writer who has taken home both the Arthur C. Clarke Award and a Hugo Award for best series.
Tchaikovsky’s work is known for combining the weird with the human. By putting incredibly relatable characters in often outlandish situations or environments, Tchaikovsky is able to dig deep into his characters. Few modern science fiction writers have earned the title of master like Tchaikovsky has.
Salvation’s Child, though it might take a different form than Tchaikovsky’s novels, is a great distillation of everything that makes the writer one of science fiction’s best. While the world around Marta may be wild, the character’s determination and grit make her eminently relatable and ultimately easy to root for.
Regardless of whether potential readers are familiar with Tchaikovsky’s The Final Architecture or his larger body of work, Salvation’s Child is a must-read for any fan of science fiction.
