Movies

One of Pokémon Legends Z-A’s numerous innovations is the introduction of several new Mega Evolutions. These help expand the roster of already available and frankly excellent Mega Evolutions, adding exciting new designs and, perhaps more importantly, powerful new Pokémon to fight by your side. Of course, the process of unlocking each Mega Evolution is a little tricky, but ultimately worthwhile, especially as some of these ultimate forms are extremely powerful.

So, once you’ve gone and caught all the best Pokémon in Legends Z-A, you’ll want to gather the Mega Evolution item each specific Pokémon requires. While completionists will aim to get absolutely every Mega Evolution, those who just want to unlock the very best need to look no further. Although not ranked in any order, the strongest Mega Evolutions are the ones that have consistent strengths to dominate in battles.

Mega Charizard X/Y

Utterly Deadly Dragons Ready To Devastate Your Opponent

Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y are two separate Mega Evolutions for Charizard, both specializing in a different form of attack. Mega Charizard X is a jack-of-all-trades, with strong Attack and Special Attack stats, while Mega Charizard Y puts a greater emphasis on Special Attack, allowing it to utilize some truly devastating Fire and Flying-type moves.

Sometimes, Mega Evolutions cost a good amount of money in Legends: Z-A. However, usually the more expensive a Mega Evolution item is, the stronger the Mega Evolution of that particular Pokémon is.

Of course, the real reason Mega Charizard X and Y are such impressive Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends Z-A is their designs. Both look incredible, especially when flying around the battlefield in real-time. However, unlocking either Mega Evolution is exceptionally difficult. To unlock Mega Charizard X/Y in Legends Z-A, you’ll need to save a considerable amount of money.

It Dominates The Battlefield With Impressive Power

While it mostly comes down to preference, it is hard to argue that Totodile is a bad pick as your starter in Pokémon Legends Z-A. It is adorable, powerful, and evolves into the formidable Feraligatr. More importantly, it gives you access to Mega Feraligatr — once you’ve gone through the hard work of reaching the final evolution and getting the Feraligite required for a Mega Evolution.

Mega Feraligatr is a truly deadly Mega Evolution, with a ridiculously high Attack stat, coming in at 160 as one of the most aggressively powerful Mega Evolutions in the game. At least when it comes to Physical moves, Mega Feraligatr has immense power, which only gets better with its high Defense. As a hard Pokémon to kill, this Pokémon is perfect for Trainers who want a companion who specializes in raw power.

Mega Alakazam

Unmatched In Special Attack Power

Player using a Mega Alakazam in Pokémon Legends Z-A

Mega Alakazam has one of the coolest designs of any Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends Z-A, with its row of floating spoons and long, thick white beard — do Pokémon have facial hair? — making it look like Santa crossed with a magician. Perhaps more importantly, Alakazam is one of the most powerful Special Attack Mega Evolutions in the entire game.

Mega Alakazam boasts an impressive 175 Special Attack stat. While its Attack and Defense are naturally lacking as a result, making it vulnerable to Physical moves, it can efficiently and quickly dispatch most foes, especially as its slew of attacks are devastatingly powerful and can dispatch foes with ease. If you love Psychic Pokémon or just want to focus on Special Attack Mega Evolutions, then you absolutely need Mega Alakazam on your team.

Mega Gengar

A Hauntingly Good Design Meets Immense Power

Much like Mega Alakazam, Mega Gengar is a Special Attack specialist capable of delivering some truly deadly attacks. While its Special Attack stat is a little lower than Mega Alakazam — it is 170 rather than 175 — it makes up for it with higher HP, Attack, and Defense stats. Naturally, these aren’t incredibly important stats for a Special Attack-focused Pokémon, but it does make it slightly more robust.

Crucially, it also just dominates both the Ghost and Poison types, making it a must-have Pokémon for players who are building a team around those types. Its design is also a lot of fun, with its brand-new arms and yellow third eye giving it a more menacing and intimidating presence, something I frankly never thought possible for the already slightly terrifying Gengar. Of course, don’t forget, to unlock it, you’ll first need to find its corresponding Mega Evolution item in Legends Z-A.

Mega Greninja

As Agile As It Is Powerful

I’ve always loved Greninja, from its design to its general effectiveness in the majority of type match-ups and battles. That’s why I’m so pleased that Mega Greninja pulls its weight in Pokémon Legends Z-A, and remains an agile and extremely powerful Pokémon. Its 125 Attack stat and 133 Special Attack stat make it incredibly versatile in most fights, as do its much lower yet mostly similar Defense and Special Defense stats.

Crucially, Mega Greninja is ridiculously fast, more so than most Mega Evolutions. It has an impressive 142 Speed stat, making it deadly fast in almost every battle. If you value speed and versatility in your Mega Evolution, then you’ll want to unlock Mega Greninja in Pokémon Legends Z-A, and fast. Frankly, I just love watching it swing its giant shuriken around as it decimates each one of my foes.

Mega Delphox

A Fast, Fiery, Menace

While not quite as fast as Mega Greninja, Mega Delphox can hold its own when it comes to a battle of speed. It is an extremely fast and equally powerful Pokémon that boasts an impressive 159 Special Attack. It is basically as if Mega Alakazam and Mega Greninja came together to form one fiery, fast, and utterly deadly fox.

Delphox is the perfect choice for Fire-type aficionados, too, with its attacks dealing lasting burning damage that’s sure to ruin an opponent’s day.

It is its pairing of impressively high Speed and Special Attack stats that easily make it a contender for the very best Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends Z-A. Of course, like most Special Attack specialists, it’s lacking in the Attack, HP, and Defense categories. However, by the time you’ve unleashed your first attack or two, your opponent’s Pokémon will likely be lying unconscious, headfirst into the concrete.

Mega Chandelure

A Formidable Special Attack Champion

Mega Chandelure has entered the running for the strongest Special Attack Mega Evolution. Like Mega Alakazam, it has a 175 Special Attack stat, meaning it is an unbelievably deadly Pokémon capable of wiping out most opponents. Both its Special Defense and Defense are rather high too, coming in at 110, making it pretty hard to kill.

While its design isn’t as inspired as some of the other Mega Evolutions — although it still looks as terrifyingly elegant as Chandelure always has — Mega Chandelure is an impressive Ghost Fire-type that deserves a spot on your team. It sadly isn’t as fast as Mega Alakazam, but its Defense and Special Defense are much higher, making it quite efficient as a tank, capable of weathering most attacks and living to dish out its own deadly damage.

Mega Lucario Z

Speed Over Power With An Inspired New Design

Alternate forms of existing Mega Evolutions are also prevalent in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, with one of the best examples being Mega Lucario Z. Unlike the normal Mega Lucario, Mega Lucario Z sacrifices offensive power for raw speed, using dynamic quickness to always establish its turn first in battles. Even though its Attack is reduced, its 151 Speed stat combines with a 164 Special Attack to still make it one of the most reliable Mega Evolutions around.

To get Mega Lucario Z in Legends: Z-A, you need to have a normal Mega Lucario of your own. With them, you can win a battle with your Mega Lucario against a Mega Lucario Z to get the alternate Mega Stone for that new Mega form.

With balanced stats in other categories, this version of Mega Lucario has a varied fighting style compared to a normal Mega Lucario. Instead of Close Combat and other physical moves, Mega Lucario Z can devastate opponents with Aura Sphere and a variety of Special Attack moves. With its Fighting/Steel-type still giving it excellent coverage, this Mega Evolution is flexible and consistent.

Mega Hawlucha

One Of The Best Designs And An Incredible Fighter

Pokemon Legends Z-A’s Mega Hawlucha opens its arms happily to receive praise.

Mega Hawlucha’s design is so good that it received its own special YouTube video to show it off. It’s flashy, flamboyant, and utterly fitting, a design so good that you may end up neglecting all of your other Pokémon just to see it out on the field in action. Mega Hawlucha, fortunately, has the substance to back up the style, with its Attack and Speed stats making it a formidable fighter.

Its Fighting/Flying type mash-up makes it deadly in battle, and its 118 Speed stat means it’ll be able to get off most attacks before your opponent even has a second to react. While it isn’t the strongest or even the fastest Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends Z-A, it is nevertheless a worthwhile Pokémon to have on your team. At the very least, Mega Hawlucha should be on your team so you can admire its phenomenal design.

6

Mega Floette

Powerhouse Of The Best Countering Type

Pokemon TCG Mega Floette Chaos Rising

Mega Floette’s Fairy-type affinity already makes them a great Pokémon against other powerful Mega Evolutions, with super-effective attacks against Dark and Dragon-types. However, the base stats of Mega Floette make it great against an even larger variety of match-ups, especially its 155 Special Attack score. 102 Speed also helps it outspeed some opponents too, especially non-Mega Evolutions.

What helps Mega Floette stand apart is its surprising defense from Special Attack Pokémon. Against someone like Mega Chandelure, Mega Floette can outlast Special Attack moves with its Special Defense stat of 148. By having some bulk, Mega Floette can establish its unique Fairy-type advantages far more often.
