Final Fantasy 9 is, for many, a point of contention. It isn’t that the game is bad, but, indeed, the opposite: its status as one of the greatest RPGs of all time has seen it muster a flock of dogmatic devotees desperate to see it receive the remake they believe it deserves. As a result, any new release surrounding it becomes a worthwhile investment, a product to display on a shelf as an illustration of one’s devotion to this beloved title.
Well, there is yet another Final Fantasy 9 release on the horizon, only this time it is releasing a tad sooner than expected. This is a project that fans are sure to love and is a lot more novel than some of the recent releases Square Enix has dropped in celebration of FF9. Of course, it won’t appeal to everyone, but for those who do manage to find value in it, this latest Final Fantasy 9 project is cheap and cheerful enough to be worth it.
What fans want above all else is a Final Fantasy 9 remake in the vein of the recently released FF7 trilogy. However, Square Enix has confirmed that such a project is unfeasible. It would require an outlandish amount of resources and stretch over far more than a mere three games, neither of which seems preferable to Square Enix or, indeed, one would imagine, a lot of fans. As much as a remake would be excellent, releasing upwards of five parts just to retell an already existing and frankly phenomenal game over brand-new entries in the franchise feels like a waste.
So, in the interim (or, more likely, forever), fans must rely on the aforementioned Final Fantasy 9-adjacent projects that Square Enix has been releasing ad nauseam as of late. We’ve had everything from puzzles to figures, although it is this latest release that should appeal to fans. Square Enix is releasing unique Final Fantasy 9 music boxes, with each one playing a different song from across the game’s impressive soundtrack. The one in question today is, of course, Roses of May.
The music box is relatively simple, coming with just one song in a brown outer shell with an image of Beatrix plastered on top. It is part of a wider set which also includes the songs Not Alone and A Place to Call Home, both of which come in their own unique box. Each music box, including Final Fantasy 9 – Roses of May, costs $25.99. So, to get the whole set, you’ll need to pay close to $80.
The Roses of May Final Fantasy 9 music box, along with the other two available music boxes, is available for pre-order right now via the official Square Enix website. They are scheduled to be released in October 2026, although a more specific release date has yet to be given. Square Enix has previously delayed Final Fantasy 9 merchandise by a month, so it is possible these will ship a little later than expected. Regardless, this is a strikingly unique piece of Final Fantasy 9 merchandise, and hopefully something that appeals to the devoted fans still awaiting the fabled remake.
