Hype for Masters of the Universe has never been at a higher level, thanks to the release of the Masters of the Universe film, starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man and Jared Leto as Skeletor. While fans might be disappointed in the new film’s box office performance, the franchise still has a few projects left to please die-hard fans. This August, Masters of the Universe will continue to expand with a newly announced 12-part series that will bring back many of the franchise’s most beloved heroes and villains in an epic way.

Fans of He-Man and Skeletor should pay close attention, because the origins of these iconic characters, along with several other heroes and villains, will be explored in Masters of the Universe: Genesis from Mattel and Dark Horse Comics. The first three-issue arc of the 12-part series will be brought to life by writer Rich Douek (Superman Red & Blue, Edge of Spider-Verse) and artist Gavin Smith (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Zord Quest).

Masters of the Universe: Genesis #1 will span 32 pages and will be available in comic shops for $4.99 on August 5, 2026. The debut issue will focus on Skeletor and explore the legendary villain’s origins as a “power-hungry demon-mage determined to seize control of Castle Grayskull, conquer Eternia, and become Master of the Universe!”

While many details surrounding the series remain under wraps, Dark Horse Comics has confirmed that the series will expand upon the current ongoing Masters of the Universe comic line. Despite building on the existing continuity, Masters of the Universe: Genesis is also positioned as an ideal jumping-on point for new readers, meaning no prior reading is required.

At the same time, the series is guaranteed to delight longtime He-Man fans, as it will pay “homage to the classic Masters of the Universe character origins.” Fans eager for an early preview can also check out the first issue’s main and variant covers, with artwork by Mark Buckingham and Lee Bermejo, respectively. Future arcs in the series will additionally feature stories from creators including Cavan Scott, Nick Roche, John Harris Dunning, Giovanna La Pietra, and Tiffany Smith.

The ongoing Masters of the Universe comics and Genesis aren’t the only projects fans should keep an eye on, especially those who wanted more out of the live-action movie. Released on June 10, 2026 was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Wings of Fate, a four-part miniseries from writer Tim Sheridan and artist Will Sliney. The series takes place within the universe of the 2026 Masters of the Universe film continuity and unfolds in the aftermath of Skeletor’s siege on Eternos, following a struggling refugee who gives sanctuary to a mysterious, injured falcon.

That premise forces the protagonist to embark on a perilous journey through the Mystic Mountains and seek aid from the legendary inhabitants of Avion to save the falcon’s life. With so many exciting projects that have either been released or will be released this year, it is clear that 2026 is shaping up to be a golden year for the Masters of the Universe franchise.
