Grand Theft Auto 6 feels so close and so far away at the same time. We’ve already seen a lot of footage of it, but some of it was also doled out at a time when it didn’t suffer from multiple delays.

Fans have already dissected the trailer quite a bit, but this Reddit thread got to the bottom of something that could have a significant impact on the game.

Will GTA 6 Have A First-Person Mode?

The Odds Are Good, Especially Post-Launch

Right now, we aren’t sure if Grand Theft Auto 6 will have a first-person mode, at least at launch. First-person gameplay has a weird history in the GTA series. In GTA 4, it was possible to aim a camera phone and spy on your surroundings in first-person, marking the first time you weren’t looking down the barrel of a gun (like a sniper rifle) to achieve the same effect.

In GTA Online, Rockstar added a limited first-person mode for some vehicular travel. GTA 5 was when things really took off, and although the base game had a limited idle first-person viewpoint, the enhanced edition of the game added a fully-fledged first-person mode. Sadly, it wasn’t as sleek as it could have been, leading to speculation about how it could be improved in the upcoming sequel.

Fans Are Convinced We’ve Already Seen It

The Trailer Gives Us A Clue

It’s easy to miss, but at 0:45 in Grand Theft Auto 6‘s second trailer, we get a glimpse of what first-person driving could look like. We see one of the game’s protagonists (Jason Duval) driving around, then the camera shifts from a first-person perspective to a zoomed-out view. This may be a cinematic camera angle, showing a cutscene, but it could also be a teaser for what this additional viewpoint looks like in the new iteration.

Another look at a city highway offers a clearer view from behind the camera, also in first-person, with both hands on the wheel. Again, this could be a tricky trailer shot, but given that first-person mode was also available in GTA 5, the signs point toward it being a legit viewpoint from the get-go.

As one Reddit user puts it, the potential for this to be explosive is high: “That’s one of the things I’m most excited about. I’m pretty sure for 5’s first-person mode, they basically just moved the camera to mount to the character’s head for the most part. In 6, it’s fair to assume that they baked first person in from the beginning, so it’s not going to be nearly as janky looking.”

While we inch closer to the Grand Theft Auto 6 release in late 2026, Rockstar will slowly drip-feed more info out. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about a potential first-person mode sooner rather than later, and it’ll include some quality-of-life improvements beyond what was possible in GTA 5. A proper first-person mode at launch, especially with an accompanying online component, could be huge.
