President Donald Trump late Tuesday night endorsed Michigan Republican Amir Hassan for the U.S. House. Hassan said he only got involved in politics after a transgender woman used the same bathroom as his daughter.
“When my 18-year-old daughter was younger, a man identifying as woman walked into the same restroom as her,” Hassan told Midland Daily News last December. “That’s why I drew the line.”

In the interview, Hassan described himself as an enthusiastic Trump supporter and said his key priorities include deporting immigrants and “keeping education on LGBTQ+ issues out of schools.”
Referencing health education guidelines from the Michigan Department of Education, which recommend that students be taught about gender identity and sexual orientation, Hassan voiced support for re-directing public taxpayer funds to private religious and charter schools.

“Let’s say a school doesn’t opt out,” he said. “If that goes against a parent’s values or faith, they shouldn’t be penalized for sending their kids to somewhere that’s parochial and has the same education or same standards, but they just don’t teach those things.”
Last October, the US Supreme Court ruled that a Maryland school district must allow parents to opt their children out of instruction relating to LGBTQ+ identities. Religious conservative activists have long sought parental upset over LGBTQ+ issues in schools as part of their plan to redirect billions of taxpayer funds from public schools to religious homeschools and charter schools.
In his endorsement, Trump wrote, “It is my Great Honor to endorse Amir Hassan, who is running to represent the fantastic people of Michigan’s 8th Congressional District! Amir Hassan has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Representative from Michigan’s 8th Congressional District — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
Numerous Islamophobic Republicans denounced Trump’s endorsement, stating that Muslims, “foreigners,” and non-Christians shouldn’t be allowed to hold elected offices, even though Hassan is a military veteran and former law enforcement officer who was born in Flint, Michigan.
In an early December 2025 Instagram post, Hassan targeted a Drag Queen Story Hour event at a local library, writing, “Our children 👧🏼👦🏾are their target🎯” in the caption and “Left AGENDA” on the event’s promotional image.
Hassan’s rhetoric echoes that of right wingers who falsely accuse drag performers, LGBTQ+ people, and their allies of “indoctrinating” or “sexualizing” children as a way to foment hatred and violence against them.
A commenter on his post wrote, “Coming from the pedophile party member. Get a life and stop f**king obsessing over these people.”
Hassan responded, “You seem to have some type of inside knowledge about pedo behavior, so let’s do this, pull up to any of my meetings with the law enforcement ,in whatever part of the district you reside and give them insight into that world. I’m not a politician, I’m a father that is fighting to bring change to a district that has been severely decimated by irrational, selfish,deceptive policy. So instead of coming to my page to argue, get outside and make a difference in someone’s life. Outside of that your just talking 💩.”
