Margot Robbie wants her character in the new Pirates of the Caribbean film to be LGBT+, according to a Hollywood insider.

Robbie confirmed she was starring in the film back in June. She promised “lots of girl power”. Robbie said she’s “really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world”.

Currently, there is little known about the character Robbie will play in the upcoming film. However many have assumed she will take over from Captain Jack Sparrow as the main character.

Jerry Bruckheimer, a Pirates of the Caribbean producer has said he’s unsure about whether Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow for the next film.

Johnny Depp resigned from his role in the Fantastic Beasts cinematic series over his legal challenge against a newspaper calling him a “wife beater”. This furthered speculation about his future with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Bruckheimer said: “Right now, we’re not quite sure what Johnny’s role is going to be.”

Margot Robbie is no stranger to playing queer characters

Last year, Robbie received nominations for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her performance in Bombshell. Her character, Kayla Pospisil, sleeps with Kate McKinnon’s character in the film.

Robbie said the character’s sexuality is a “huge aspect of her story and emotional journey that’s unresolved”. She also speculated that “being with a woman will be endgame for Kayla”.

Earlier this year, Margot Robbie’s character in Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn, came out as bisexual. The Suicide Squad sequel shows a slot machine depicting her exes, one of which is a woman.

Robbie said Quinn’s bisexuality is something she’s “looking to explore on screen”.

She said in a 2018 interview: “If you read the comics, you know that Poison Ivy and Harley have an intimate relationship.

“In some comics they convey it as a friendship; in other comics you can see that they’re actually sexually involved as a couple.

“I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favourite aspects of the comics.”
