Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most beloved RPGs of all timeand helped reestablish the power of Star Wars games across the industry. Released all the way back in 2003, it’s remained a staple of the genre for decades, and fans constantly reference it, fondly recalling its numerous twists and turns.
However, fans aren’t so keen on how the remake announcement has been handled. Revealed back in 2021, the remake hasn’t shown off much in the way of actual info, and development has even changed hands at least once. The unveiling of The Fate of the Old Republic, a spiritual successor, hasn’t really helped the remake’s profile either.
That could change, though. As we know, the gaming industry is unpredictable, and reveals can come out of nowhere, even without an accompanying tradeshow or stream. Based on a discussion being held on X, fans are losing it over a new teaser for the franchise (via Star Wars.com).
A new key art was revealed for the annual Star Wars “May the 4th [of May] Be With You” celebration, and fans are noticing that it represents multiple aspects of the universe, not just the three major film trilogies.
While Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are predictably front and center in the image, we also see shades of various other video games, including Star Wars Outlaws and the Star Wars: Jedi series. Fascinatingly, there’s also a small section dedicated to Knights of the Old Republic, headlined by Darth Revan, one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars history.
Here are the major characters on display in the KOTOR universe (the Empress Senya and Lana Beniko from the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic both make an appearance, too):
- Darth Revan
- Darth Malgus
- Jolee Bindo
- HK-47
Fans are getting excited by the prospect of Disney referencing Knights of the Old Republic in any capacity, with one excitedly exclaiming: “Finally giving the Old Republic some love, about time.”
Others are skeptical we’ll see anything major out of this image: “I am 99% sure they are there because the focus this year is video games. With two new ones coming out this year, they went on to highlight the past, and Kotor is one of the most influential games in history, let alone a Star Wars game.”
Some are just plain frustrated: “Every time they do this stuff with Kotor, I feel like Charlie Brown and the football.”
For now, it seems Disney is unsure how to handle the Old Republic timeline. Although some things are in the works (including the KOTOR remake, allegedly), many could come down the line later or be canceled during development.
Star Wars, however, will live on. There are tons of current-era projects in the works, following the success of The Mandalorian, so we’ll see plenty of movement there. We might just be waiting a while for The Old Republic saga.
