Marvel Studios and Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine has added to its list of records, now becoming the highest-grossing U.S. R-rated movie ever on a global basis. Getting there, the franchise snatches back the title from 2019’s Joker ($1.079B). Through Thursday, the Merc with a Mouth and the adamantium-clawed X-Man have grossed  $1,085.6M (or $1.086B) worldwide. The breakdown is $516.8M from domestic and $568.8M from the international box office.

Back in October 2019, when Joker was crowned the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, it did so by surpassing 2016’s  Deadpool final of $783M (Deadpool 2’s $785M global gross includes $47M from its PG-13 holiday cut). Either way, there’s a bit of turning tables going on here.

The Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-fronted threequel passed the $1B global mark last weekend, making it only the second U.S. R-rated movie ever to the milestone (Joker being the other one).

Deadpool & Wolverine reached $1B faster than Joker, though the latter film did not have a China release. D&W is also the second biggest movie of the year, after Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2, and the only other $1B+ grosser of 2024.

Yesterday, D&W added $11.9M globally ($4.5M from domestic and $7.4M offshore). The Top 10 overseas markets through Thursday on the Shawn Levy-directed phenom are: UK ($58.7M), China ($57.1M), Mexico ($39.6M), Australia ($33.2M), Germany ($27.3M), France ($26.6M), Brazil ($22.9M), Spain ($20.6M), India ($18.4M) and Italy ($16.5M).

Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine has been on an absolute tear since it shredded expectations with a $444M global debut at the end of July and is well above the the final totals of both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 domestically, internationally and worldwide.
