Right-wing country singer Kyle Coulahan teased a new song on TikTok about his gripes with pronouns. TikTok users quickly pointed out that this song opened with a pronoun and proceeded to make fun of him.
Coulahan starts by singing, “I never understood the whole pronoun thing / or why people think it was okay to push their agenda / till we believe.” A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun in a sentence; these include words like “you,” “we,” “they” and “I.” Children who attend primary school are taught about this concept, as it is a fundamental grammatical rule for writing sentences and communication.

Pronouns are also used to signify a person’s gender identity; someone who is non-binary could use they/them pronouns, or in some cases it/its. Generally, it shouldn’t be a big issue to learn the pronouns someone wishes to use and to correctly gender them or her/him. In fact, conservatives have proven how they quickly understand pronouns when someone deliberately misgenders them.

The rest of Coulahan’s pronoun song criticizes people who wave non-U.S. flags and also describes his views of “proud American” past times, which include high school football games, singing the national anthem, race car events, hunting season and “getting saved by the blood of Jesus.” It is ironic how he describes conservative stereotypes about liberals while listing American values as things commonly associated with “redneck” stereotypes.
His TikTok video of the song, dated February 7, was captioned, “We’re back, we’re so back! Here’s a new one, should we release it? #america #usa #countrymusic.”
Coulahan is a country singer from Tennessee and Florida who has made a career through his music promoting hyper-conservative themes and lyrics. He has 45.7K monthly listeners on Spotify, and his discography includes “Jesus and Trump” and “Still Proud To Be An American,” the latter being his most listened to song.
Users in his comment section pointed out that the first word in his song denouncing pronouns was “I,” a first-person singular pronoun.
His statement, “I never understood the whole pronoun thing” can be interpreted as a logical fallacy, showing he clearly understands how to use pronouns in a sentence.
More people began to mock him, one user commenting, “‘I never understood fundamental concepts of grammar,’”
TikTok user @fatherjivi stated, “This song probably hits hard if you’re stupid,” in a text overlay of them intensely closing their eyes, clenching their fist and saluting as the song plays.
Another TikToker took this idea further and turned Coulahan’s song into a drinking game, in which one takes a drink every time Coulahan sings a pronoun.
In this TikTok from a user named Kirsten, it is revealed that Coulahan uses at least 16 pronouns in his song.
Perhaps this is more of a beer-sip drinking game; taking 16 shots of liquor would put anyone in the hospital. Thankfully, Kirsten’s TikTok was fake, and Kirsten didn’t drink 16 shots.
