Just like that, it seems like High Potential has ended its Game Maker storyline.

Most viewers will agree that the ending to High Potential Season 2 Episode 2 seemed a little anticlimactic.

After a spring and summer filled with teasers of the Game Maker’s arc and how he was a great villain against Morgan, it seems a little too early for the entire storyline to be dropped. Because of that, I don’t think it’s over.

A Red Herring Storyline

At the end of High Potential Season 2 Episode 2, Morgan was finally able to piece it all together, connecting Matthew Clarke to Maya’s abduction.

It all came down to the blood.

Matthew thought that he had committed the perfect crime, and it seems strange that he overlooked the fact that Maya had no cuts on her to justify all that blood in the car.

However, he also didn’t expect to be caught, so I don’t think this was part of a big scheme to get himself behind bars.

In fact, he wanted to take matters into his own hands, but Morgan and the LAPD were one step ahead of him on that front.

While it looks like the Game Maker has been arrested and will rot in prison, I have a feeling that this is a bit of a red herring in High Potential Season 2

Well, not a red herring in the traditional sense.

It’s more of one of those arcs that is going to be revisited in time.

Villains Love to Help

One thing High Potential didn’t do in the first season that other shows have done in the past is bring a villain back.

A lot of shows, such as The Rookie, will opt for a smart villain that is needed in a later case, and I think this is the way High Potential is going to go with the Game Maker story.

There is a reason the series opted to save Matthew from his attempts to avoid capture, and not just because it thwarts his own plans and offers some sense of closure for Oz.

There’s a bigger story arc that comes with Matthew’s capture, and that’s to use him at a later stage.

Villains love to help the cops with their cases, especially when they can get something out of it, and the Game Maker is going to play on that at some point.

He’s going to realize that there’s an opening to reduce his prison sentence or gain a bit of freedom somewhere; anything to avoid the cage that he is now trapped in.

And he’s smart enough to play Soto, Karadec, and even Morgan at times.

Learning Something on the Inside

One of the easiest ways for High Potential Season 2 to prevent the Game Maker arc from being a waste is for Matthew to find out about something being plotted inside the prison.

He’d be able to manipulate other prisoners easily, and that would lead to him obtaining information useful for the LAPD.

Of course, it would involve some sort of game, because he would need Morgan to be reminded that he is just as smart as she is.

Alternatively, there could be a copycat out there, although this wouldn’t make as much sense, since Matthew’s crimes didn’t last for too long and weren’t widely publicized.

Rather than a copycat, there could be someone else with a smart mind, someone who Morgan and Matthew need to team up against.

Morgan doesn’t have all the answers in High Potential, and she can sometimes miss things, so she could need to turn to Matthew to see what he can spot in the clues.

This would then lead to some tension within the Major Crimes department, which was teased before High Potential Season 2 started, as Oz wouldn’t be happy about having to rely on his abductor, and Karadec would worry about Morgan.

I think it’s going to take time for High Potential to revisit the Game Maker story, and it’s going to happen when we least expect it.

After all, we have the Arthur/Roman arc to cover first, and we have a lot of questions about that one.

Hopefully, High Potential won’t make that as anticlimactic as the Game Maker arc appears to be so far.

A new episode airs tonight, so don’t forget to check back here when it’s over to see our latest High Potential review!
