Move Over, Sweatpants. It’s—Checks Notes—Sweat Shorts Season

Fashion & Style

When quar started back in March, we were dealing with unpredictable times and even more unpredictable weather. Rain poured down as we sheltered in place and we quickly turned into creatures of comfort, reaching for stress-reducing house slippers, fleece sweaters, and, most notably, sweatpants. We were walking Regina George memes, and lived in fear of wearing jeans again, because they will never be as forgiving as the elasticized waistbands of terrycloth pants. Cozy girls emerged in 2018, but 2020 forced us all into the cult.

But the weather is warming up, and our sweatpants will soon do exactly what they’re supposed to—make us sweat. That is not acceptable. I refuse to perspire indoors when all I’ve done in the past two months is tell everyone within earshot that I’m considering signing up for the Criterion Channel.

There is only one logical solution: As we move forward in lockdown, lock down a pair of sweat shorts as your summertime uniform.

As sweatpants’ shorter sister, these cotton cutoffs provide everything you need for a seasonal quarantine. They expose your calves for that vitamin D you’ll get from your living room window, allow you to toe the same work-inappropriate line while you Zoom with colleagues, and they look good with pretty much everything. You can wear them long like Billie Eilish (who dresses eerily similar to 2000s-era tweens obsessed with JNCO jeans and Pogs), go shorter like Dua Lipa, or opt for a blazer on top if you feel like dabbling in business-leisurewear . If sweat shorts are good enough for pop stars and fashion’s top influencers, they’re good enough for you.

Plus, I never liked biker shorts anyway.

Some of the best styles are coming from quar’s it-sweatpant brand—yes, it’s a thing— Pangaia. The “materials science company” is a collective of designers and scientists creating bio-engineered fashion with sustainability in mind. You’ve probably already spotted their wares on your feed—they’re behind those crewnecks with tiny text boxes you’ve been squinting at on Instagram. Their shorts sell out immediately, so if you can’t locate one of Pangaia’s pairs we found equally great options below.
