Angelina Jolie Joins Instagram, Shares Story From a Teen Girl in Afghanistan

The Oscar winner gained over two million followers in two hours.

Actress, director, producer, and humanitarian Angelina Jolie can now add a new bullet to her resume: Instagram star.

Though she’s posted only once, the beloved Oscar winner accumulated an astounding two million followers in just two hours on Friday. While not yet official, this appears to be a new record. The previous champion, according to Guinness World Records, was Taeil of the K-pop group NCT, who got to one million followers in one hour and 45 minutes. Previous celebs who could make similar “fastest to one million” boasts include Rupert Grint and Jennifer Aniston.

Far more important than her quick ascension to social media supremacy is the message that Jolie, who will next be seen in Marvel’s Eternals this November, chose to share.

In her post, titled “A Letter From An Afghan Girl,” Jolie explained that she received a letter from a teenager in Afghanistan and pointed out that people in the country are “losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely.” She joined Instagram “to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights,” she wrote.

The heartbreaking letter details how the young woman is terrified that the Taliban will strip away her human rights. “They have a very bad past,” the unnamed author wrote.
