Adam Sandler Lights Up At Haim’s Chanukah Tribute

Pop Culture
The pop-rock sisters turned a timely song parody into a possible tour announcement.

Haim, the Grammy-nominated pop-rock trio consisting of sisters Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim, presented the internet with a terrific sixth-night-of-Chanukah gift on Friday.

With a caption that just read “Sandler we love you,” the trio posted an updated, low-fi version of Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song,” which he debuted on Saturday Night Live 27 years earlier on that very night.

As with the original, the tune boasts about Jewish celebrities, and connects their names with silly rhymes. Arguably the most famous verse in Sandler’s version—“Paul Newman’s half Jewish, Goldie Hawn’s half too/Put them together, what a fine lookin’ Jew!”—has been modernized with mentions of Doja Cat and Timothée Chalamet.

Also notable is how their song kicks off with “Maya Rudolph lights the menorah.” Rudolph, of course, is the longtime partner of Paul Thomas Anderson—director of seven Haim music videos and the film Licorice Pizza, of which Alana is the star, and in which Este and Danielle, plus their mom and dad, appear. (Rudolph is in the film as well.)

It took only a little over an hour for Sandler to give two shamashes up to the video.

Throughout the holiday, which Haim has dubbed Haimmukah, the group has been uploading fun videos, raising money for charity, and giving away gifts to fans (expensive musical gear and tickets to Licorice Pizza).

True Haimheads, however, know that during Haimmukah 2017 the band composed an untitled Chanukah song. Upon its release, the group wrote “sandler we’re coming for you.”

As for the new video’s punchline—“should we go on tour?”—Haim’s official website currently lists just 12 dates for 2022 in late June and early July. Seven of those appearances are in the United Kingdom, with one each in Sweden, Belgium, and Ireland. The last two listed are in Denver and San Diego. The Boston Calling festival, scheduled for Memorial Day weekend at the Harvard Athletic Complex, has them on the bill with other acts like Foo Fighters, Rage Against The Machine, Run The Jewels, and the ferociously talented multi-instrumentalist and blues performer Celisse Henderson.

In case you missed it, here was Haim’s outstanding tour announcement in 2018.
