No matter how bad things get, remember: The Golden Girls is finally returning to UK TV screens

British television channel Channel 5 has become the hero we need but truly did not deserve after it confirmed it will air The Golden Girls from beginning to end.

Let me tell you a story. Picture it, Sicily… OK, not quite that. The US show kept fans entertained for nearly a decade across 180 episodes, seven seasons, from 1985 to 1992.

It followed the lives of four single women ‘of a certain age’ living together in sun-splashed Miami. But with rosy rejoinders and oppressively camp sass, the warm comedy showed that a series about age can be ageless.

After years of being out of circulation and coming just as a, uh, lockdown to curb a global viral pandemic happens, Channel 5 picked up the rights and will air the comedy weekday lunchtimes from April 27 at 12:40pm, according to its website.

We really should be thanking The Golden Girls for being a friend to us amid the coronavirus crisis, to be honest.

The Golden Girls to return to British shores as America relaunch is in the works.

The Golden Girls featured one of TV’s perfect character lineups during its acclaimed run on NBC, netting itself a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series twive.

Dorothy (Bea Arthur), the practical divorced woman; her mom, Sophia (Estelle Getty), the old-world old lady; Rose (Betty White), the Midwestern sweetheart; and Blanche (Rue McClanahan), the landlord, who happens to be a vivacious Southern belle.

While the show was warm, it dipped into daring comedic material, such as being gay and living with HIV at times, which gained it an endearing gay fanbase.

All four lead actors even went onto score an Emmy Award each for their performances.

News of the relaunch comes as Cyndi Lauper and Jane Lynch are set to star in a “Golden Girls for today”.

Seems the pair just wanna have fun as the 1980s pop icon and the comedian announced they have joined forces for a new comedy project for Netflix.

Lynch let it slip backstage at the Creative Arts Emmys last night, according to NBC News.

But the news might not be too surprising for followers of comedian Carol Leifer, known for her work on Seinfeld.

She posted on Facebook back in July: ” It’s official, heading out next with a new half-hour comedy, starring Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper.

“A writer’s dream to work with these two legends. Can’t wait to see where we land…”
