Naeem Juwan, the Baltimore-born and Los Angeles–based artist formerly known as Spank Rock, has announced his new album Startisha. The LP is out June 12 via 37d03d. According to a press release, Naeem began working on Startisha four years ago in Philadelphia. He later continued work on the record at Justin Vernon’s home studio. Startisha features contributions from Vernon, Francis and the Lights, Ryan Olson, Swamp Dogg, Velvet Negroni, Amanda Blank, and Micah James.
Startisha includes Naeem’s recent cover of Silver Apples’ “You and I.” The album also has a new song with Swamp Dogg and Justin Vernon called “Simulation.” Watch Naeem’s new “Simulation” video, directed by Scott J. Ross, below.
In a statement, Naeem said “Simulation” was inspired by books like Lewis Hyde’s Trickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth, and Art. “I wrote this song to remind myself, and hopefully everyone that hears it, that nothing is real, and our greatest defense in this life is our own creativity, and finding great faith in whatever sigils and icons we choose to guide us,” he said.
