Julie Byrne has announced a new album, her first in six years. It’s titled The Greater Wings and it’s out July 7 via Ghostly International. She’s also shared a single titled “Summer Glass” and announced several tour dates in support of The Greater Wings. In a press release, Byrne shared a brief statement about her latest LP:

My hope for The Greater Wings is that it lives as a love letter to my chosen family and as an expression of the depth of my commitment to our shared future. Being reshaped by grief also has me more aware of what death does not take from me. I commit that to heart, to words, to sound. Music is not bound to any kind of linear time, so in the capacity to record and speak to the future: This is what it felt like to me, when we were simultaneous, alive, occurring all at once. What it has felt like to go up against my edge and push, the love that has made it worth all this fight. These memories are my values, they belong with me.

Since issuing Not Even Happiness in 2017, Byrne has made a handful of guest appearances on other tracks. Last year, she appeared on “Glass Jaw” by the New York duo Leya, after she’d joined Hundred Waters’ Trayer Tryon for “New Forever” in 2020. The same year, Byrne and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma collaborated on the single “Love’s Refrain.”

Byrne worked on The Greater Wings in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. She began to record the album with her Not Even Happiness collaborator Eric Littmann before his death in June 2021. Byrne finished the album with producer Alex Somers in the Catskills.
