“Well, look what T.J. Maxx dragged in…” says Stanley Tucci’s sharp-tongued art director Nigel as Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) makes her triumphant return to Runway mag. The only problem — Meryl Streep‘s Miranda Priestly doesn’t even remember her. She’s “one of the Emilys,” Nigel helpfully prompts in the first trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The first full trailer of the 20th Century Studios sequel, set to the opening notes of Madonna’s infectious (and on-the-nose) “Vogue,” comes after an initial teaser was released in November of last year. That first look didn’t give much away in terms of plot, though it teased the much-anticipated reunion between stars Hathaway and Streep. In this new glimpse, it’s revealed Andy is returning to the Vogue-esque glossy as its features editor.
Earlier today, the studio previewed the trailer with a 30-second spot that featured an exchange between Hathaway’s Andy and her work frenemy (Emily Blunt). In a shady repartee, the latter observed, “You’ve changed. You’re much more confident. You kept those eyebrows, though, didn’t you?”
The beloved original, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name and released in 2006, follows recent journalism grad Andy, who lands a strenuous job — which, notably, a million girls would kill for — as a junior assistant to the infamous Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of a high-fashion magazine.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will hit theaters May 1. Tucci, Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman reprise their roles, and are joined by newcomers Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Rachel Bloom, Patrick Brammall and Lady Gaga.
Director David Frankel and scribe Aline Brosh McKenna returned to their roles, with Wendy Finerman and Karen Rosenfelt producing the followup, which is expected to trace Miranda’s perspective as she battles the decline of the print industry.
