Although Sarah Michelle Gellar recently visited the set of the next I Know What You Did Last Summer installment, don’t expect a Helen Shivers resurrection.

Following her Thanksgiving on-set photo from the upcoming sequel, the Golden Globe nominee confirmed “she dead” of her character in the original 1997 slasher, while admitting she “got in a little bit of trouble” for her behind-the-scenes post.

“You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say closed sets, you know,” she said on Live with Kelly and Mark. “So my husband’s [Freddie Prinze Jr.] starring in the movie and it was Thanksgiving so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set and I was like, ‘Oh what a great picture,’ and then I posted it.

“Then I found out that they hadn’t posted any pictures from the set yet — hadn’t announced they started filming. Yeah … that was an ‘Oops! My bad!’” added Gellar.

Her appearance comes after Gellar shared a photo of an IKWYDLS director’s chair after visiting Prinze and director friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. “Scooby Doo 3 coming soon….” she jokingly captioned the post, referring to the other franchise that starred her and Prinze.

Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Philippe in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997).

Gellar noted that the movie didn’t even have a social media account. “They had to make one after I did that,” she said.

“Again, my bad. But it was such a cool picture, and it was so much fun. I mean, that’s the movie Freddie and I met on. So, it was really cool to bring our kids there. And my best friend in California is directing it and wrote it,” added Gellar. “It was just such a special time. And so, I got in a little bit of trouble.”

Although Gellar’s character is dead, she previously told People that she and Robinson “joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,” adding: “So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt is also in talks to reprise her role. The sequel’s cast includes Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King, with Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette rounding out the ensemble.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will be released in theaters on July 18, 2025.
