‘Knives Out’ Tops $300M Worldwide As Moviegoers Keep Flinging Dollars At Rian Johnson Whodunit

Movies
Rian Johnson’s Lionsgate/MRC whodunit Knives Out has sailed past the $300M mark worldwide. It’s the latest milestone for the box office anomaly that is becoming the second-highest-grossing original movie of 2019 behind Us and also whipping Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s $142.4M stateside.

More amazing: This Thanksgiving release is still in the domestic top 10 at the box office, ranking ninth last weekend in its 11th frame with $2.3M, -11%, at 1,443 theaters with $159M and running for the Ram Bergman-Johnson T-Street production. Knives Out is one of five films in the past year to remain in the top 10 for at least weekends and the first non-Disney film to reach the mark since Universal’s Best Picture Oscar winner Green Book in March.

When the pic’s stateside run concludes, it’s expected to be among the 10 highest-grossing films ever to open over Thanksgiving. Stateside endgame is expected to be $165M. And Knives Out only had one Oscar nomination, for Johnson’s original screenplay (though it got three Golden Globe noms for Best Comedy, Comedy Actress Ana de Armas and Comedy Actor Daniel Craig). Abroad, Knives Out counts $140.9M. The pic set a record for the highest multiple for a Thanksgiving non-animated wide release (2k+ runs) — now approaching 6X. Among all films, it is behind only Disney’s 1995 franchise-starter Toy Story ($222.5M).

Top-performing offshore territories for the ensemble that also stars Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Christoper Plummer LaKeith Stanfield and Christopher Plummer include China, with $28.4 million in box office, and four territories where it is still in release: the UK ($16.8 million), Germany ($9.7 million), Australia ($9.3 million) and France ($8.2 million).
