Imax and Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries have started production on Stormbound, a feature documentary the follows storm chaser Jeff Gammons.
Imax is financing the project, which is directed by Miko Lim (Ocean Mother) using Imax film and Imax digital cameras. It’s slated for release in 2025 across the big-screen theater network.
“Next to firefighters, there may be no more frontline view of our changing climate than storm chasers. It’s a terrifying and beautiful pursuit that will be stunning in the Imax format,” said McKay (Don’t Look Up).
“This film will transport audiences to the eye of the storm. The sheer power and beauty of nature has never been seen like this before,” said Imax head of documentaries, John Turner. “Stormbound is what a documentary blockbuster should be about; incredible storytelling matched with Imax’s unparalleled immersive experience.”
The film travels with Gammons into the dangerous world of storm chasing during peak U.S. storm season “showcasing nature’s raw power” and “one man’s struggle to find peace in the most unlikely of places,” Imax said. It features unseen footage of hurricanes Charley, Florence, Ian, Irma, and Katrina.
Florida-based Gammons is a weather spotter for West Palm Beach’s WPTV and professional storm chaser for three decades. In September, his wife donated a kidney to save his life as a previous transplant began to fail.
The film is produced by McKay and partners Todd Schulman and Trevor Jones, and Imax’s Turner. Hyperobject Industries’ Stephanie Mercado will executive produce.
McKay took the name of his film and TV production company from philosopher Timothy Morton, who coined the term “hyperobjects” referring to forces that affect us in tangible ways, but that are beyond our limited scope of our perception. “At Hyperobject, we dive head first into these unknown areas, to explore the social, economic, political and environmental forces shaping our lives in these insane, shifting, and unprecedented times,” its website said.
Don’t Look Up (2021) is the story of two astronomers trying to warn indifferent humanity about an approaching comet that will destroy human civilization.
