In the wake of the new Mean Girls movie segueing from streaming to a Jan. 12 theatrical release, Paramount is stoking the fanbase today, Oct. 3, which doubles as Mean Girls day and National Boyfriend day by launching the original 2004 movie on TikTok — in 23 parts.
Paramount’s intent with to bring the Tina Fey scripted IP to a new, young audience. Since midnight when the Mean Girls account muchroomed from 700 to 24K and growing. Mean Girls is trending No. 1 on Twitter. At 4PM, the movie will stream entirely on Paramount Pictures’ TikTok. Also, the Paramount+ logo is pink today. There’s a cross engagement across Paramount Pictures and Paramount+.
The studio also dropped the new title treatment to the film which stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Avantika, Mahi Alam, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, Ashley Park, Connor Ratliff and Jon Hamm. Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne are directing the new film, from a script by Fey. Broadway Video’s Lorne Michaels has returned to produce alongside Fey, with Erin David, Caroline Maroney and Micah Frank overseeing for Broadway Video, alongside Eric Gurian and Jeff Richmond for Little Strange.
October 3rd is celebrated as “Mean Girls Day” because of a line in the movie from Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady, who has a crush on Aarron. She tells him, “It’s October 3rd.” The one-liner has led to fans of the film celebrating the pic with memes and wearing pink. In the movie, Cady, fresh from a safari life abroad with her parents, returns to the U.S. and attempts to fit into high school life, which is run by the popular girls, the “Plastics”. Cady sets about clawing her way to the top in the high school hierarchy.
Paramount tested the new movie recently and the scores were so great, they decided to launch the pic on the big screen.
The original movie, directed by Mark Waters, grossed over $86M stateside and $130M worldwide.
The Mean Girls 2018 Broadway musical had music by Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Nell Benjamin, and a book by Fey. Mean Girls was nominated for 12 Tonys, including Best Musical.
