The Umbrella Academy has renewed for a fourth season, but fans are devastated after Netflix announced it will be the beloved show’s last.

Fans have eagerly awaited news of the sci-fi superhero series since the third season premiered on Netflix in June. The shoe is based on Gerard Way’s graphic novels of the same name and follows a family of adopted siblings with superpowers who continuously find themselves trying to stop the end of the world.

Steve Blackman – the series creator, executive producer and showrunner – said he’s thrilled that “incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeve siblings’ journey we began five years ago”.

“But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes,” Blackman said.

Thus far, the returning cast includes Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H Min, Ritu Arya and Colm Feore.

There’s no word yet when the final season will premiere.

There were mixed feelings among The Umbrella Academy’s dedicated fan base online after the Netflix announcement. Many were excited to see their comfort characters and finally get some more questions answered – but they were equally heartbroken to learn of the show’s ending.

Warning: spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season three are below.

In the latest season, the Hargreaves siblings landed in a new reality where their domineering father Reginald (Feore) adopted seven other superpowered kids, dubbing them the Sparrow Academy.

The two groups of siblings clashed throughout the season, and Luther (Hopper) found love with one member of the Sparrow Academy named Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez).

Viktor (Page) discovered his trans identity early on in the season and worked in later episodes to control his powers alongside a familiar face from season two.

At the end of the season, the Hargreaves siblings ended up in a new timeline where they are separated and stripped of their supernatural abilities. Sloane accompanied her Umbrella Academy counterparts, but it’s unknown if she will be reappearing in season four.

Blackman told Netflix’s Tudum that the next season will be filled with twists and turns but that the Hargreaves siblings are “always up for a challenge”.

“This new timeline has been dictated by Hargreeves [Feore], who reprogrammed the Universe at the end of the season three finale,” Blackman said. “But because of Allison’s [Raver-Lampman] actions, he didn’t get to finish what he started before Allison pressed the reset button.”

He continued: “So, the siblings losing their powers isn’t going to be the only oddity in this timeline.

“There are new enemies who want to see them wiped out of existence, but how do they manage without their powers? Is there even a way to get them back? The stakes have never been greater.”
