Pop legend Elton John has revealed that he can no longer see very well after a severe infection in his right eye that he experienced over the summer. Despite this, a new song of his will soon premiere in a documentary about his life.

“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see,” he recently told Good Morning America. “My left eye is not the greatest… There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but I’m kind of stuck in the moment.”

“Going into the studio and recording … I can’t see a lyric, for a start. We’re taking an initiative to try and get it better. But, at the moment, that’s really what we’re concentrating on. It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen, and it kind of floored me. I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything. I can’t watch anything,” he added.

Nevertheless, the singer said, “I’m so lucky. I’m the luckiest man in the world. I’m so proud of the documentary. I’m proud of my sons. I’m proud of my attitude towards myself and what’s going on. I’m just very lucky and I’m very grateful.”

John’s infection began during his recent time in the south of France. Upon announcing the infection to his social media followers, he mentioned that he was recovering with assistance from an “excellent team of doctors and nurses.”

“I am healing,” he wrote in a September Instagram post, “but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”

The aforementioned documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, was co-directed bby his husband David Furnish and R.J. Cutler. It follows “the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows” of the 77-year-old pop star’s 50-year career, including “how he overcame adversity, abuse and addiction to become the icon he is today,” the film’s description states.

The film will feature a new original song from him and show his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium, a venue that he played early in his career. The film will be released on the Disney+ streaming platform on 13 December.

“Music saved me, it also nearly killed me,” John said of his experience. “Even when I was at my lowest ebb, I always played music and it moved me, so music’s been my saviour throughout my life.”

The legendary pop star retired from touring following his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which concluded in July 2023.
