Trump and his followers won’t get everything. But they will get enough. They will erode protections and damage democratic institutions. They will stack the odds in their favor so that it’s harder and harder for Democrats to succeed.
The saddest thing to consider is that the damage was freely chosen but can never be undone. Americans were willing to forget about an insurrection against the seat of democracy because they were upset about the price of English muffins.
