Recently, we wrote about how Netflix’s Dahmer was the streamer’s most-watched drama series of all time. With a staggering 115,600,000 unique viewers and over 1 billion hours streamed, Dahmer is one of the platform’s reigning champs. The anthology’s next entry, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, might have a shot of ascending to the top (and if Stranger Things 5 ever releases, it will undoubtedly chart), though it might have some competition in the Non-English chart where a show you might not have heard of before has cracked the Top 10 as the most-viewed murder mystery on Netflix.
Check out more about the Spanish-language series Who Killed Sara? below:
Per Netflix: A wealthy family framed him for the murder of his sister. Now he’s going to use their darkest secrets to make them pay.
José Ignacio Valenzuela’s Who Killed Sara? aired for three seasons from 2021 until 2022. Remarkably, the second season dropped just two months after the first season wrapped. In today’s era of aggressively long waits between seasons (again, looking at you, Stranger Things), that is nothing short of a miracle.
Who Killed Sara? was a global success, managing to snag the number one spot for several weeks in the United States. Until Squid Games, it was Netflix’s most-viewed foreign language show of all time. No small feat for a murder mystery.
It helps that Who Killed Sara? was a critical success alongside being a commercial hit. Critics praised the mystery, eroticism, and telenovela feel imbued into every episode, rendering it compulsively watchable up until its shocking conclusion. That kind of bingeworthy genre television is where Netflix truly shines. Setting aside the ethos of the present state of television viewing—watch an entire season in a night, wait years for the next batch—murder mysteries are uniquely poised to captivate audiences from the start and demand they watch what happens next, and Who Killed Sara? was a record-shattering success because of that.
Even today, fans can’t get enough of the show. As more and more titles hit Netflix—especially more murder mysteries starring Nicole Kidman—it’s easy for something like Who Killed Sara? to slip under the radar. If you missed the series when it first premiered, there’s a solid chance you might not know it even exists.
Several fans are still catching on, however, and you can check out their choice reactions below:
