The Halloween season is officially over. As we know, the mainstream has closed that chapter for the year and moved on to Hallmark Channel original Christmas movies. But the truly dedicated among us are still watching genre fare. You know who you are. Not only are die-hard horror fans still watching genre pictures, they are eating and sleeping and breathing it. Not to mention, Googling it!
As it turns out, It Comes at Night is currently the most Googled horror movie on the planet. Why the renewed interest in a film that originally bowed in 2017? I cannot say for sure. However, I suspect it probably has something to do with the picture landing on HBO’s streaming platform, Max. People like to vet their movie picks before making a time investment. Vetting usually involves a quick Google search.
Well, let me save you the effort and give you a handy rundown right here: It Comes at Night was released to fairly universal acclaim in 2017. The picture is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical approval rating of 87%. It Comes at Night was a moderate box office success for A24, pulling in just under $20 million at the global box office against an estimated budget of just $5 million.
Trey Edward Shults wrote and directed the film. He says he wrote the screenplay to process the pain he felt after his father’s death. Shults previously grabbed the attention of critics and cinephiles when he burst onto the scene in 2015 with the critical darling Krisha.
