Boutique production company and distributor Neon has been on a winning streak since its inception in 2017. With films like Pig, Longlegs, and Cuckoo, the outfit has been giving A24 some competition in the elevated genre fare space. I’m always eager to check out their latest offering. Speaking of their latest offering, a recent Neon release just so happens to be captivating Hulu subscribers today. That’s right. The camp melodrama Mother’s Instinct sits as the most-watched film on the platform today.
Mother’s Instinct was helmed by Benoît Delhomme. The picture is a remake of Olivier Masset-Depasse’s French language thriller of the same name. Masset-Depasse’s 2018 film is based on a Barbara Abel novel from 2012.
This film wasn’t a critical darling but it’s still slaying on Hulu.
The picture didn’t garner rave reviews from critics. But it wasn’t a total bomb either. The film currently holds a score of 52% ‘fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with 63 reviews tallied. The critical consensus reads: “Mothers’ Instinct is a glossily enjoyable showcase for Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, although the stars are ill-served by a thin story and shaky tonal command.”
If the lukewarm critical reception doesn’t deter you, make your way over to Hulu and give this star-studded thriller a shot.
The picture’s impressive cast includes Jessica Chastain as Alice, Anne Hathaway as Céline, Josh Charles as Damian, and Anders Danielsen Lie as Simon.
Olivier Masset-Depasse (who directed the original adaptation) was slated to helm the English language remake when the project was announced in 2020. However, Benoît Delhomme took over directorial duty when Masset-Depasse announced his departure from the project in 2022.
Mother’s Instinct was released in a small handful of US theaters over the summer (I’m not kidding. It literally only played on six screens) and then made its way to VOD.
The setup for Mother’s Instinct goes like this:
Housewives Alice and Celine are best friends and neighbors who seem to have it all. However, when a tragic accident shatters the harmony of their lives, guilt, suspicion, and paranoia begin to unravel their sisterly bond.
