We share many Stephen King recommendations here at Dread Central. The beloved author is well-known to fans for watching movies and TV and sharing his honest thoughts via social media.

On that note, I recently came across one of King’s tweets championing The Stranger, a show based on a novel by fellow best-selling author Harlan Coben.

King was riveted by The Stranger, and he made that clear when he posted about the series. His tweet reads,The Stranger, on Netflix: Excellent mystery. Addictive.”

I watched The Stranger during the peak of the Covid pandemic and also enjoyed it. It’s a twisty mystery series with an ending that few will see coming. With that said, The Stranger does feature plenty of Coben’s favorite tropes. Anyone who has seen multiple Coben series will know they almost always feature a character (usually a woman) with dark secrets in their past that come to the forefront to impact their idyllic life in unforeseen ways.

Like several other Coben adaptations, The Stranger begins with an out of context flashback sequence that gradually starts to make more sense as the series progresses and the blind spots are filled in.

Although I sometimes wish the structure of Coben’s output was a bit less formulaic, a setup like this still consistently hits the spot for me. I like to escape into the narrative and get lost in the twists and turns. And there are certainly plenty of those waiting for you here.

If you’re looking for something to watch on a lazy day at home, The Stranger is a very bingeable series and it’s only eight episodes, so it’s not a major time commitment. When the mood strikes, you can head over to Netflix and see why King was so taken with the show.

The program stars Richard Armitage, Hannah John-Kamen, Siobhan Finneran, Jacob Dudman, and Shaun Dooley.

The setup for this Stephen King-approved series goes like this:

A web of secrets sends family man Adam Price on a desperate quest to discover the truth about the people closest to him.

That’s all we have for you at present, dear reader. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more exciting recommendations from your favorite creators in the genre space as we continue to uncover them.
