Stephen King doesn’t get enough credit for his killer wit. It’s no secret that he’s great at writing horror stories. But he’s also a very funny man with a knack for throwing epic shade. King began trolling Elon Musk on Twitter shortly after the unhinged businessman bought the social media platform. It was great fun to see the bestselling author make wisecracks at Musk’s expense prior to King’s recent exit from the platform. Fortunately, he hasn’t gone far. The Carrie author has relocated to Threads and brought his killer wit with him.
Since the move to Threads, King has continued to share his signature blend of dad jokes, political commentary, and film and television recommendations. Speaking of his penchant for promoting content that catches his eye, King recently posted on Threads that he’s been really enjoying the Apple TV+ series Before.
The author’s post reads: “Before (Apple+): This show has a creepy Exorcist vibe, and Billy Crystal is very good. Short and scary episodes.”
The setup for Before goes like this:
Eli, a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, encounters a troubled young boy who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past; as Eli attempts to help the boy, their mysterious bond deepens.
Stephen King is a fan of Before. But the same cannot be said of most critics.
While King seems taken with Before, the majority of critical reviews have been negative thus far. The series holds a paltry 32% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the critical consensus reads: “Starring Billy Crystal playing against type, Before initially intrigues but doesn’t bring enough ideas or variety to sustain what comes after.”
Though critics aren’t collectively taken with the series, the program does hold a Popcornmeter rating (formerly the audience score) of 70%. That seems to suggest the show may have a level of merit critics have overlooked. If a chance at uncovering a diamond in the rough via a recommendation from Stephen King has you curious to check Before out, head over to Apple TV+ to find out what you’ve been missing.
