We could always use more Lovecraft in our games, and we’ll definitely be getting more in the sequel to PsychoDev’s 2017 point-and-click adventure title Chronicle of Innsmouth with Mountains of Madness. The sequel is expected for release later this month, which is set 10 years before the original game, and is based on the Lovecraft’s novella, but also features references to his other works.
In the sequel, you play as private investigator Lone Carter, but you’ll also step into the boots of Abdul Alhazred, writer of the dreaded Necronomicon, and even H.P. Lovecraft himself!
The story goes that Carter wakes to find himself on a beach near Innsmouth after having his body ripped apart. After struggling to get that last cigarette, he loses consciousness, only to wake up again completely fine. Obviously haunted by this dream, Carter needs to get away from Innsmouth and back to his hometown of Arkham. Unfortunately for him, trouble follows him back to Arkham with disappearances, a ritual murder and more that threatens his very sanity.
Like the first game, Mountains of Madness uses old-school pixel-based art and interface that’s reminiscent of classic Lucasarts adventure games (rendered in 640×480, no less!). As well, prepare to test your own sanity with an array of puzzles that you’ll need to solve in order to progress in the game.
“March 2021” isn’t exactly a definite date of release, so keep an eye on this one.
Props to 3rd Strike for the news.
