Original 1998 Version of ‘Resident Evil 2’ Coming to GOG on August 27th

Horror

After gracing fans with the 1996 PC port of Resident Evil back in June, fans have been waiting for the port of 1998’s Resident Evil 2 to show up on GOG. That day will be coming soon enough, as GOG has announced that Resident Evil 2 will arrive on the site on August 27.

GOG says that this version of the game “fully reproduces the original elements of this game released in 1998”.

Much like what the GOG team did with Resident Evil, they’ve gone back and tweaked some things for the sequel to make it playable for modern PC gamers that might not have the patience for setting things up. That includes full Windows 10 and 11 support, 6 localizations of the game, new rendering options, improved audio volume and panning, reworked key binding setting and audio settings and more.

The team has also seen fit to go back and address some of the bugs in the original game, including missing text, invisible diaries and looping sounds. Resident Evil 2 will also support modern controllers, and for those who aren’t keen on the grinding, the 4th Survivor and Tofu modes will be enabled from the very beginning.

Of course, the obvious question now is just when we’ll be able to complete the trilogy of the original games with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. As with the original announcement, RE3 is due out later this year, but no timeframe has been specified. That being said, we can probably expect the same enhancements/fixes for Nemesis that we’ve received with the first two entries.

You can pre-order the bundle which includes all three games from GOG.com. And if you’re curious, check out Aaron’s take on the GOG version of Resident Evil.
