Horror can be a lot of things, and some of the genre’s greatest surprises come from filmmakers toying with expectations and tone. Consider last year’s Diablo Cody-penned Lisa Frankenstein, an uproariously entertaining horror rom-com our Editor-in-Chief called a “hyper-femme universe full of bright colors, lacy outfits, and silk cravats that speaks to viewers yearning to find their place in the world.”
Sundance sensation Love Lies Bleeding wasn’t horror in the traditional sense, but its queer love story used graphic body horror to augment its main characters’ strengths and weaknesses, and the result rendered the film one of the year’s best. Amid all the great horror films released last year, though, you might have missed arguably the freshest, most entertaining of the bunch. Luckily the film is now available to stream, and since its release, it’s been sitting solid as the most-streamed horror movie on Max.
Per Max: After getting dumped by her boyfriend, Laura Franco finds a connection with a terrifying yet charming monster that lives in her mother’s house.
Caroline Lindy’s Your Monster is pretty much chocolate cake in filmic form. It’s sweet, rich, delicious, and practically begs to be shared. In my original review out of last year’s Sundance Film Festival, I called it a “monstrously good time,” and the film stuck with me so much, that I even included it on my Top 10 list for the entire year, writing, “[Melissa] Barrera reanimates herself, and in the process, an entire subgenre.” The horror rom-com is a dying breed, and Your Monster is as good a piece of evidence as any that there really should be more.
Your Monster is simply too danged cute. It’s romantic, a little violent, and pretty much the antithesis of where the horror genre has been headed these past few years. While I love buckets of blood and nihilism as much as the next guy, it’s refreshing to see a horror movie have as much fun as Your Monster regularly does. It’s the movie high school me had hoped Daniel Barnz’s Beastly would be. Sorry for the deep cut.
Fans online have been having just as much fun with Your Monster as I did. It was one of last year’s best, though its limited theatrical release made it easy to miss. Now, it’s available for all, and fans can’t get enough of its swooning, joyous, infectious energy. Check out some choice online reactions below:
