My grandpa Dave was an incredible guy. He was one of those people who never met someone he didn’t like. Dave had a smile for everyone and a warmth that radiated. He died way too young and that left a hole in my heart that still hasn’t fully healed. One of the things I remember most from our time together is that he absolutely loved Westerns. The Western genre now has a special place in my heart because those films remind me of him.
My fond memories of my grandfather surely fuel my appreciation for horror Westerns. I loved Organ Trail and also had a lot of fun with Place of Bones. But you cannot talk about horror Westerns without mentioning Bone Tomahawk.
Bone Tomahawk is iconic. But you don’t have to take my word for it. I’m far from the only fan of S. Craig Zahler’s genre-melding effort. Stephen King is a vocal supporter of the film. And so is legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. In fact, GdT once took to Twitter to proclaim his undying adoration for this gritty picture.
The Crimson Peak director captioned his tweet: “BTW: a shout out to Bone Tomahawk. Gnarly, brutal stuff and some great performances- plus you get to bask in [Kurt] Russell & [Richard] Jenkins’ light!!”
Guillermo del Toro does not undersell it when he says the film is brutal. In fact, I’d recommend against watching it on a full stomach. The flick is that grotesque. But I’ll leave it there and let you discover what I mean when you watch Bone Tomahawk.
If you are curious to track down this carnage-filled ride for yourself, you are in luck. You can find Bone Tomahawk streaming for free (with ads) on Pluto as of the publication of this post.
The setup for this Guillermo del Toro-approved horror picture goes like this:
In the Old West, a sheriff (Kurt Russell), his deputy (Richard Jenkins), a gunslinger (Matthew Fox), and a cowboy (Patrick Wilson) embark on a mission to rescue three people from a savage group of cave dwellers.
