Saks Fifth Avenue and the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance Team Up to Give Back This Holiday Season

Fashion & Style

Saks Fifth Avenue brings the holiday cheer each year with an impressive array of holiday windows at its iconic storefront on 5th Avenue and 49th Street. This year, in the spirit of giving back, the luxury retailer is launching a partnership with the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance to provide better educational and societal opportunities to girls around the world.

The unique collaboration will be activated in several ways; firstly, Saks will be donating $1 million to the Girls Opportunity Alliance to support girls around the world in their education journeys and positively impact their communities. With the help of Girls Opportunity Alliance, adolescent girls are able to receive education that will help them to gain a global perspective and understand the ways in which they can uplift their communities.

Speaking about the partnership, Saks CEO Marc Metrick said: “This year, we are proud to support the Girls Opportunity Alliance and to champion the program’s mission to empower adolescent girls around the world through education. Our support of the Girls Opportunity Alliance is the perfect way to capture the joy of this time of year.”

In addition to its generous donation, Saks will be curating a multi-vendor merchandise collection featuring Saks brands across all categories: mens, womens, home, beauty, and accessories. Participating brands include perfumer Bond No. 9, ready-to-wear brands Christopher John Rogers, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Fear of God, jewelry designer Martine Ali, and handbag designer Brandon Blackwood.

From Nov. 23 into the New Year, 100 percent of the net proceeds of the collection—sold online at Saks.com and at participating Saks Fifth Avenue stores—will go toward Girls Opportunity Alliance. Saks is also offering three young women from the GOA a chance to shadow members of the Saks team to get a peek into what it takes to run a luxury e-commerce platform. This is the first of many mentorship and shadowing opportunities that Saks plans to provide to young women in the coming years.

To celebrate this unique synergy, Saks will be unveiling its holiday windows tonight, with the theme of reconnecting with loved ones and family throughout the season. Children from around the New York City area were asked to describe what they wish to do most with their loved ones during the holidays. From getaways to carnivals to hanging at home, their responses have been transposed into over-the-top art installations that embrace the little things and demonstrate the power of quality time spent with those we love most.

In honor of the window display, former First Lady of the United States and founder of the Girls Opportunity Alliance Michelle Obama will make an appearance, and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City are set to perform. The event will be available to stream online at Saks.com via Mastercard at 7 p.m. ET.
