28 years later

After years of silence about the 28 Days Later series, we’re now not only getting a new sequel in 28 Years Later, but an entire trilogy. And the second film in that trilogy has been announced. Titled The Bone Temple, director Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) helms the film, set to be released on January 16, 2026, from Columbia Pictures.

That release dates comes just six months after the planned release of 28 Years Later, which is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2024. The two films were shot back-to-back.

While we don’t know much about 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, here’s the full synopsis for 28 Years Later:

It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

In the trailer for 28 Years Later, which is one of the most watched horror trailers of recent memory, there are shots of what looks like a literal bone temple. More specifically, said temple looks like an intricate nightmarish landscape covered in bleached human bones, with a monolith of human skulls at its center. Plus, we see a bloodied Ralph Fiennes wandering through said landscape with Jodie Comer. Could there be ritualistic cult violence unfolding in the wake of the rage virus? I guess we’ll have to wait until 2026 to find out!

Could this be the titular bone temple?

DaCosta will direct 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple from a screenplay by Alex Garland. Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice and Bernard Bellew produce the film, with Cillian Murphy acting as an executive producer.
