Mike Flanagan Megan is Missing

According to writer/director Michael Goi, Megan Is Missing began life as an admonition about the dangers of online predators. I can see an argument for that. It’s certainly an eye-opening film that pulls no punches. But, it’s also a lot to take in.

In the years since its 2011 release, the film has become something of a traumatic rite of passage for Gen Z. The flick went viral on TikTok in 2020 thanks to legions of users documenting their attempts to watch the film. As part of the process, they would report back on how much of it they were able to get through before turning it off. Many participants reported shutting the picture off before the end of the first act.

I first watched Megan Is Missing a few years ago and I was properly traumatized. It made me very uncomfortable. I made it through to the end in a single sitting. But I didn’t come away unscathed. The picture stayed with me for quite a while after I first endured it.

Megan Is Missing

In spite of its notorious reputation, the film has at least one high-profile supporter who managed to make it through to the end. I’m talking about filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Flanagan didn’t just make it to the end of the film. The controversial found footage chiller holds a place on the director’s Letterboxd list of his all-time favorite horror pictures. I suspect the flick graces that list because of the visceral reaction it elicits. Few films have hit me so hard.

Where can I stream Megan Is Missing?

If you haven’t seen Megan is Missing and would like to learn what all the fuss is about, you can find it streaming on Tubi (for free with ads) as of the publication of this post.

Just keep in mind that this is not an easy watch. Even the most seasoned horror fans find the content stomach-churning. Megan Is Missing is widely considered one of the most disturbing horror films of the 21st century for good reason.

The setup for this Mike Flanagan-approved shocker goes like this:

A teenager mysteriously disappears without a trace after meeting someone she had been talking to online.
