Stage, film, and television actress Lisa Banes is reported to be in critical condition following a hit-and-run on Friday evening in New York City. She was reportedly struck by a scooter while crossing the street to stop at her alma mater, the Julliard School, the elite performing arts college located at Lincoln Center.
So far, it’s unclear what kind of scooter the driver was operating. Her manager told the AP she was hit by a scooter or motorcycle. A witness said the scooter operator “didn’t even stop. He just kept going.”
“We have several days ahead of us to pray for Lisa,” Banes’s wife Kathryn Kranhold, a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal and the Hartford Courant, told the New York Daily News from the hospital. She added that “if anyone has any information about the scooter driver, we ask them to please call police.”
Banes’s film work includes appearing as Rosamund Pike’s mother in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, Tom Cruise’s older hook-up in Cocktail, and one of the boardroom big-shots in A Cure For Wellness.
On television, Banes has had recurring roles on Nashville, Royal Pains, and Six Feet Under. She’s had guest shots on a wide spectrum of situation comedies and cop shows like NCIS, The King of Queens, NYPD Blue, Frasier, Murder One, and Roseanne. Trekkies remember her as Deep Space Nines Doctor Rehnol, a physician from the Trill homeward on the Symbiosis Commission.
On and off-Broadway, Banes has worked on a slew of outstanding projects. She was in the cast of Neil Simon’s Rumours with Christine Baranski, André Gregory, Ron Leibman, and Jessica Walter; Tom Stoppard‘s Arcadia with Paul Giamatti, Billy Crudup, and Victor Garber; and a 1998 revival of Cole Porter’s High Society with Anna Kendrick, and Melissa Errico. She was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in 1984 for her performance in Wendy Wasserstein’s play Isn’t It Romantic? which co-starred the legendary songwriter and performer Betty Comden.
