Grimes has revealed that she was hospitalised for a panic attack after her surprise cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live.

The Canadian singer, who has been in a relationship with Elon Musk since 2018, appeared alongside the Tesla CEO during last week’s episode of SNL. Grimes made a cameo appearance as Princess Peach for a Super Mario-themed roleplay skit, which was about as awkward as it sounds.

The “Delete Forever” singer shared backstage photos of herself posing with Miley Cyrus, who was the musical guest on the SNL episode, on Tuesday (11 May). Grimes wrote on her Instagram that she “forgot to post” the pictures because she “somehow caused myself to have a panic attack and went to the hospital yesterday”, which was “quite scary”.

She added the experience was a sign that it might be a “good time to start therapy”.

Grimes also gushed about appearing alongside Cyrus and thanked the SNL team for taking the pictures. She wrote: “So grateful to the SNL team for being so kind and letting me sneak in as princess peach [and] so proud of my beautiful E (which I know will upset the grimes fans so I apologize in advance) but he killed it”.

Grimes has spoken about her struggles with mental health. In a 2002 interview with Dazed, she explained that she had “really bad social anxiety disorders” and had “panic attacks all the time” before she started making music.

“I was really not a happy person,” she said. “Since I’ve started making music, it’s the first time in my life that I’ve been a happy person.”

Grimes and Musk welcomed their son X AE A-Xii in May 2020. Musk referenced their child’s unique name during the opening monologue for SNL. He joked that the show is a “great way to learn something new about the host” before showing his son’s name on the screen.

“It’s pronounced: ‘cat running across a keyboard’,” Musk said.

The couple originally named their child X Æ A-X12 but changed it a couple of weeks later to reportedly comply with Californian law, which doesn’t allow for numbers or symbols in legal names.
