The Chicest Outerwear For Anywhere

Fashion & Style

Collectively, our approach to fashion has changed a lot over the past year. Whereas in seasons before we’ve been quick to embrace trend after trend, we now find ourselves drawn to the classics—pieces that offer the comfort and practicality we look for in a time of scaled-back outings, but also exude the quality and timelessness we want to fill our wardrobes with. Enter four classic Max Mara Icon coats that effortlessly fit the bill.

“Coats are the ultimate statement piece that you can wear over anything,” says editor and stylist Cassie Anderson. “You’ll get endless mileage out of your favorites.” As we transition from fall to winter, a coat that we can wear anywhere is top of mind. And while Max Mara outerwear makes a statement all on its own, there’s still much fun to be had styling it for your day to day.

Ahead, against the backdrop of the fashion and street style capital of New York City, our take on how to wear four classic coats this winter.

OVERSIZED: the 101801

We’ve had a decades-long love affair with this coat, which looks as modern today as it did when it first debuted nearly 40 years ago. The design and proportions, which have remained untouched since the first issue, are the secret to its enduring appeal. And Anderson plants the 101801 in the closet staple category, noting that its simplicity can easily be dressed up or down. “A turtleneck and a loafer are the perfect complements,” she says. “Androgynous and sophisticated.”

COCOON: the Teddy Bear

“This coat is the epitome of cozy,” says Anderson, likening it to a plush warm blanket—only much chicer. Immediately embraced by fashion editors, models, and celebrities when it debuted in 2013, the style gave way to a “Teddy mania” street style phenomena that has stuck ever since. “I like the Teddy Bear over straight leg jeans and a silk button-down for a relaxed yet polished fall look,” Anderson says. Opting for a bright color, such as red, adds some welcome boldness to a dreary winter day.

WRAPPED: the Lilia

Outerwear should never be shapeless, and the Lilia coat is the perfect way to find your silhouette amidst all those winter layers. Combining multiple standout design elements like kimono sleeves and front pockets, the exceptionally soft wrap style drapes beautifully on the shoulders and cinches at the waist with a matching belt. Wear it over a midi dress with ankle boots for an elevated look that’s effortlessly polished.

SLEEK: the Manuela

Tailoring is key when striving for an effortlessly chic look. The exceptionally soft but structured style of the Manuela lays beautifully on the shoulders, and can be left open or chinches at the waist with a matching belt. When worn open over leggings and a hoodie, it completes your weekend errand-running look; add it to a dress, tights, and an oversized handbag, and you’re ready to tackle a day of business appointments. Balance out the luxe with one of Anderson’s favorite outfits: leather pants, a T-shirt, and your favorite flats.
