Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” could be set to top the UK singles chart for the first time.

The world’s campest Christmas song, widely loved by queer people everywhere, was a huge hit when it was first released as the lead single from her 1994 album Merry Christmas – but amazingly, it didn’t hit the top spot in the UK.

Carey’s classic Christmas hit was held off the number one position by East 17’s “Stay Another Day” in 1994, and while the song has charted every year since, it has never hit the top spot in the UK.

But that could be about to change, according to the Official Charts Company. In its official chart update, published at 5.45pm on 30 November, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is coming in at number two behind Ariana Grande’s “Positions”.

In Monday’s chart update, Carey was just 900 chart sales behind Grande – and if her classic song keeps up its festive momentum, it could yet claim the top spot on Friday when the official charts are announced.

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” is just one of four festive songs making it to the top 10 in Monday’s chart update. Wham’s “Last Christmas” is currently at number five, while “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues is on course to chart at number seven.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber’s cover of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is currently charting at number nine.

‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey went to number one for the first time in the US in 2019.

If “All I Want For Christmas Is You” hits the top spot in the UK this December, it will give Carey even more cause to celebrate after it hit number one stateside for the first time last year.

If anything, the song seems to become more and more popular each festive season, as people find themselves increasingly unable to resist its Christmassy charm.

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” has topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Not bad for a song that took just 15 minutes to write.
