Michelle Obama’s ‘Vote’ Necklace Sent Twitter Into a Search Frenzy

Fashion & Style

Michelle Obama has done it again. The former First Lady gave a DNC speech endorsing Joe Biden that, as one Twitter user put it, felt like “an intervention for the soul of the country.” Not only did she take on Trump, calling him “the wrong president for our county,” but she also demanded America take firm and immediate action against the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic racism.

It was perfect, of course, equal parts powerful and persuasive. Also flawless—and very apropos—was her choice of jewelry for the virtual remarks. A simple gold chain spelling out “V-O-T-E” dangled from Obama’s neck, and it caught the attention of pretty much everyone on the Internet. Google searches for “Michelle Obama necklace” spiked like crazy, and people took to Twitter to find out the designer.

The necklace is speculated to be a custom-made piece from ByChari, a Black-owned jewelry brand featured in ELLE’s 25 Jewelry Brands To Bookmark On Instagram. The brand’s vibe is minimalist with a focus on light accessorizing. “Rather than create one-and-done pieces,” ELLE editors Nerisha Penrose and Justine Carreon write of the brand, “ByChari crafts simple, elegant necklaces and rings with subtle embellishments ensuring they’ll have more than a one-year residency in your jewelry box.”
