Distancing itself from the previous films in the franchise, Darren Bousman‘s Spiral: From the Book of Saw (now playing in theaters) tells a new story within the universe, and even features the introduction of a brand new puppet. Gone is the iconic Billy puppet that was introduced by James Wan back in 2004, replaced with a new puppet being called “Mr. Snuggles.”
Chatting with Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast this week, Bousman details the doll’s origin story, revealing that he’s the one who came up with the new pig puppet.
“One of the things I was really adamant about was that we have more iconography that fans could latch onto, that was similar but different,” Bousman explains. “Originally in the script there was no puppet. I was like, this whole thing revolves around the police department, let’s make a cute pig puppet. And everyone was like, that’s ridiculous. So I took it upon myself in the final week of prep to have one created. I had an artist draw out what I wanted, I had him animate it, and then I brought it to the producers. I was like, how can you say no this?”
“That was my biggest win,” Bousman adds.
If you’re a fan of the movie you’ll be happy to hear that Trick or Treat Studios will be releasing a replica of Mr. Snuggles this Halloween, along with a Spiral mask and Halloween costume!
