The star also touched on their final months with their loved one, who passed away at the age of 14. In addition, the actor received a few condolences from their co-stars on the show.

For many, actor Chris Meloni is best known for playing Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, first appearing in 1999. Originally departing the series in 2011, he would return to the character a decade later for Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Other shows Meloni has appeared in include the prison drama Oz and the Syfy series Happy!, which he also executive produced. He’s also appeared in films including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Runaway Bride, Wet Hot American Summer, and Man of Steel.

Recently, Meloni shared some tragic news with fans on Instagram. The actor recently lost his family dog, Scotty, who was 14 at the time of his death.

In the caption, Meloni wrote, “He began as a rescue pup from Kentucky. The kids named him Scotty, I wanted to name him Biscotti…the kids won.”

Meloni continued by touching on the various names he gave Scotty over the years. He shared, “My ‘pet’ name for him was Little Mister, pronounced Lidder Midder. Towards the end I found myself calling him “Puppy” as if to recall happier times and maybe stave off the inevitable.”

The actor then explained Scotty’s final months with the family. As he explained, “He had cancer and was given 1 month to live. He gave us 3- he was a giver. 14 years was a good run, and in the words of Jon Stewart, ‘in a world of good boys, Scotty was the best.’” Meloni ended the post by concluding, “It is never easy… Godspeed Lidder Midder.”

In the carousel post, Meloni also included photos and videos of Scotty. Fans could see the beloved pup spend time with the family and Meloni himself.

Mariska Hargitay, who co-starred with Meloni on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, shared her condolences in the comments. Hargitay wrote, “Sending you love my friend. Rest in peace sweet Scotty.”

Fans also shared their sympathies in the comments. Offering their prayers, many found some comfort that Scotty had 14 years. Some comments included:
