Our distribution label DREAD helped launch Art the Clown as a pop culture icon with the release of Terrifier. The success of the first feature paved the way for a franchise that’s showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, the series’ third installment grossed roughly $90 million at the global box office, even claiming the top spot during its opening weekend. With a strong showing like that, it’s no surprise that the films have some high-profile fans. Among said fans is Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan.
Flanagan keeps a record of his favorite horror films on Letterboxd, and I’m pleased to report that Terrifier claims a coveted spot on that list. Flanagan came to prominence as an indie filmmaker and has often been supportive of other scrappy creators like Terrifier’s Damien Leone. As for what Flanagan digs about Terrifier, perhaps he’s taken with the visceral sendoffs, the maniacal tone, or the undying enthusiasm of the film’s perpetually grinning antagonist. No matter the case, Flanagan is a fan of Art the Clown, and so are we.
If you’re reading this post, you’ve surely seen Terrifier at least once by now. But just in case you need a refresher: A crazy clown stalks and tries to kill three women in a wretched old apartment building on Halloween night.
What do you dig about Terrifier, dear reader? If you can’t answer that question right away, maybe it’s time you gave the film another look. I am always keen to track down my favorite films on physical media. However, you may be content to play the streaming lottery. If so, you’re in luck. As of writing, Terrifier is available to stream on Tubi, Xumo Play, Pluto, The Roku Channel, Fandango, Plex, and Prime Video. How’s that for options?

Multi-hyphenate Leone wrote, directed, edited, and co-produced the flick. His core cast includes Jenna Kanell, Samantha Scaffidi, Catherine Corcoran, and David Howard Thornton (as Art).
So, there it is, dear reader. Beloved filmmaker Mike Flanagan counts Terrifier as a personal favorite. If that news has you nostalgic for a rewatch, you have a multitude of options at your disposal. Stay tuned to Dread Central in the very near future for more essential updates and recommendations from your favorite creators. In the meantime, if you feel so inclined, you can keep up with what my menagerie of pets and I are watching via Threads.
