Kyle Mooney and His Cast Dial up the Gore [Video]

On the heels of its release, I sat down with the killer crew behind the A24’s outrageous new black comedy, Y2K. In our conversation, I speak with writer/director Kyle Mooney, best known for his successful and hilarious tenure on Saturday Night Live. Joining us are the film’s young stars, Jaeden Martell and the hilarious newcomer Julian Dennison. Martell is known to horror fans for starring in the recent reboot of Stephen King’s IT, with part one becoming the highest-grossing genre release in cinema history.

In the film, on the last night of 1999, two high school juniors (Martell and Dennison) crash a New Year’s Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy. Horror fans rejoice; this one is surprisingly gory and violent. Think Maximum Overdrive meets Dazed and Confused.

A24’s latest venture, Y2K, directed by Kyle Mooney in his feature debut, hits theaters today, December 6, 2024. The film reimagines the infamous Y2K bug, blending disaster and comedy as technology turns against humanity at midnight on New Year’s Eve 1999. The ensemble cast includes Rachel Zegler and features appearances by Fred Durst and Alicia Silverstone.

Y2K premiered at South by Southwest on March 9, 2024, and is now available exclusively in theaters. Following its theatrical run, the film is expected to stream on HBO’s Max around late March 2025, in line with A24’s distribution agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery.
