Clint Eastwood is legendary. He’s a holdover from a bygone era. The beloved filmmaker is pushing 100 and still delivering quality content as an actor and director. I hope I live well into my golden years and I hope I’m as cogent and prolific as he when I get to be his age.
I am not putting you on when I say Eastwood is still cranking out bangers in his twilight years. His latest, Juror #2, was released to primarily positive reviews. And he shot that film in his mid-90s. That’s nothing less than exceptional. However, we are not here to talk about Juror #2 today. No, we are instead spotlighting another recent effort from Eastwood. I’m talking about Cry Macho, a Western thriller he starred in and directed in 2021.
Here’s the setup for this Clint Eastwood Western/road movie/thriller hybrid:
A onetime rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder, in 1978, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home and away from his alcoholic mum. Crossing rural Mexico on their back way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman may find his own sense of redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man.
This one got lost in the Covid shuffle. The flick bowed on Max the same day it debuted in theaters. I suspect that took some of the wind out of the pictures sails. Even though it wasn’t a box office success or a critical darling, the feature still has its merits. Critics took care to praise Eastwood’s performance, although some lamented that the pacing is a bit slow and the script is unpolished.
How can I watch Cry Macho?
If you haven’t seen the flick yet, I suggest you watch HBO’s Max and evaluate its merits.
The film represents Eastwood’s last acting role to date. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw him pop up in at least one more on-camera role. He’s not showing any signs of slowing down.
Eastwood directed the movie from a screenplay by Nick Schenk and N. Richard Nash. The screen treatment was adapted from Nash’s novel of the same name.
That’s all I have for you for the time being. Don’t fret; I’ll be back soon with more updates on where to stream your favorite films and series. If you can’t wait until then, come find me on Threads, where I go by @FunWithHorror.
