Captain America 4 Underway After The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Finale

Series creator Malcolm Spellman is planning to cowrite the fillm. Here’s why Anthony Mackie must be the lead.

The last episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier brings with it a piece of not-very-surprising news: Marvel Studios is developing a new Captain America movie with Falcon creator and lead writer Malcolm Spellman.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, Spellman will write the feature film with another scribe from the Disney+ series, Dalan Musson. (Marvel and Disney did not immediately reply to a request for comment.) Little else has been revealed about the plans, but some things can be inferred based on where the show leaves off.

Spoilers ahead …

The moral conflict of the show surrounded who had the right, or the will, to carry the mantle of Captain America. Mackie’s Sam Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon, grappled with whether he deserved to hoist the iconic shield left to him by Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame

After seeing it fall into the hands of someone truly unworthy, the rampaging “new” Captain America John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Wilson retrieved the shield. Then he was warned away from carrying it by Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), a now-elderly Black soldier who was injected with super-soldier serum decades ago against his will, then wrongly imprisoned by the very country that experimented on him.

Ultimately, Wilson decides the ideals that the shield stands are important to defend, and only by carrying it can he try to undo the wrongs of the past and present. With great pride, Wilson identifies himself in the finale as “Captain America.”

Given that Spellman and Musson are both working on the script for Captain America 4, it’s inconceivable that after all that struggle someone other than Mackie’s character would take on the title role.
